Updating garmin gps
I have the Garmin Area 660 and use it in my RV-8 along with a Garmin GTX 345 All-In-One transponder. As far as I'm aware, XM WX is not yet available on the 660.From what I understand they are working on adding it as a software update. The Aera 660 is quite different from the Stratus devices. This Aera 660, on the other hand, is a GPS receiver with its own display. The Stratus is a GPS and ADS-B receiver that works with the Fore Flight appon an i Pad or i Phone (and nothing else! You can enter flight plans, and see you position and planned route on various types of maps and charts.I fly a Vans RV-8 and while flying mostly rely the 660 for several reasons. It has a much brighter higher resolution display that can be easily read in full sunlight. I actually have the 660's brightness turned down to 75% and its far easier to see and read then the Ipad using Foreflight. After 30 days, we will continue to support the product for a full year, but refunds and exchanges are not accepted.
I've only had this Garmin for a week but it's a huge improvement over my old 396.
Charts would be updated on the same schedule as the paper charts.
I don't recall being able to plug in an airway and have it produce a plot to fly.
However, to display weather and traffic you need one of Garmin's ADS-B receivers, such as the GDL 39 series or you can subscribe to XM weather, which requires a different receiver and a paid subscription.
The Stratus is a GPS and ADS-B receiver that works with the Fore Flight appon an i Pad or i Phone (and nothing else! You can enter flight plans, and see you position and planned route on various types of maps and charts. That said, it does much of what Foreflight on an i Pad does, with a more daylight-readable screen and smaller silhouette blocking the panel.
Overall, I am quite satisfied with the 660, and I highly recommend it.
